Lucky Me

Friday the Thirteenth in October. Scary stuff. Perhaps it's a good day to play the lottery.

Actually, in a way I have been playing the lottery. It's called the NASDAQ lottery. (Some people mistakenly refer to it as a "stock exchange", but I know better.) Throw your money in and watch it disappear. Maybe it's more like a magic trick than a lottery. Only there seem to be a lot of disappearing coins and not so many rabbits out of a hat lately.

My home PC is too slow. I do a fair amount of image processing, and it can be pretty painful on large images. I'll probably get a faster machine for Christmas or thereabouts. No matter how fast it is, though, you can rest assured that it will seem too slow in rapid order. One thing is sure - it'll sport an AMD processor. That's because Intel and its Rambus-memory, intellectual-property-portfolio grasping, litigiously-inclined pseudo-monopoly can kiss my big furry behind.

I hate having to walk through the "cigarette gauntlet" every time I come to work. You know, that's when you have to hold your breath until you get past all of the sad sad smokers who have clustered outside of the building's entrance, since they are (wisely) forbidden to smoke inside. These people are always crabby, too. They don't like having to smoke outside in the cold and the rain, they don't like seeing me showing up for work at ten, and they don't like looking at me holding my breath. I used to say "Hi", but I got too many blank stares, so I gave it up. Probably there's too much carbon monoxide in their brains for them to utter anything more than piglike grunts. Or so I surmise.

Well, as you can tell, I'm pretty excited about the coming weekend. I'll have plenty of time to wait for my abacus of a computer to crunch through some image manipulation, while I breathe fresh air and avoid seeing my investments lose value faster than you can say "tech stock bubble burst". It's the stuff dreams are made of.

You can respond to my ranting here.

A penny for your rant.
