A Mind Divided

I'm going to complain about the current election fiasco again, so if that is not your bag, be forewarned.

I am of a divided mind about the cold war currently raging in Florida. On one hand, I don't think that Bush should be handed the presidency just because of a poorly designed ballot in one county or because the current, but not necessarily the "true", count favors him. On the other hand, I just want the whole mess to be over. There will be always be errors when counting votes, and one hopes that they would cancel out in the long run.

On the third hand, the fact that the margin of victory is so slim, and that the slightly favored candidate just happens to be the governor's brother argues for a very careful scrutiny of the whole recount process. I suppose that there will be no clear winner here, no matter whom the court ends up picking as the victor. The losing side will consider the winning candidate to be illegitimate. (Well, most politicians are bastards anyway, but that's not what I mean.) I can't imagine a strong president arising from this chaos.

Philosophically, we can imagine that in a perfect world, the perfect vote counters would come up with numbers that were indisputable. This not being such a world, perhaps we would be best served by tossing a coin, perhaps one that was very slightly (say, 200 parts in 6 million) slanted towards Bush. I read somewhere that a coin toss is already slightly biased because of the distribution of metal in the coin. I think a fair system would be for Bush to win if the coin lands heads, for Gore to win if the coin lands tails, for Nader to win if the coin lands on edge, and for Buchanan to win if the coin inserts itself into orbit and fails to hit the ground at all.

Personally, I'd like the coin to spin furiously, split into four parts and take all four of them out. But maybe I've been playing a little too much Soldier of Fortune lately.

You can respond to my ranting here.

I can't rant - don't ask me.
