I learned a few things from the Japanese reseller yesterday. One thing was that the Japanese support in our product was totally screwed up - again. It turned out to be a case of a little knowledge was a dangerous thing. In other words, some of the changes I made to support Japanese actually made the program run worse when it was run on a real Japanese machine. Once these shortcomings were pointed out, it was fairly simple to fix them.
Another thing I learned was a simpler way to enter Japanese characters, which will make my life easier in the future. It turns out that once you get into a special mode, you can type the hiragana characters phonetically using the English alphabet. This is a lot easier than looking up each syllable in a table, and then entering the Japanese symbol from a little onscreen keyboard.
I learned that the correct way to say "Banzai!" (
) is indeed to raise both arms at the same time,
just like in the movies.
Finally, I learned what
means. You may recall that this is the character
with which I was having so much trouble in the first place, because from a code point of view, part of it looks like
a backslash character, which then gets misinterpreted as a directory delimiter. Anyway, it simply means "table."
Not bad for a day's work. I have to wonder what got pushed out of my head to make room for the new information, since I'm pretty sure my brain is full now. I hope it was something useless like the name of my kindergarten teacher or some such. (I believe it was Mrs. Bangs, so I guess it wasn't that.) Oh well - bansai!
