Decoding the Weather

It is snowing very heavily as I write this from my all-but-deserted office. Most of the people here have already left in an attempt to beat the inevitable traffic slowdowns. (Of course, since the slowdowns are inevitable, the effort was futile - but who am I to criticize people who were smart enough to get out of work early while I am stuck here?)

Around Boston, it is difficult to determine what the weather will actually be in the winter, because the misforecast Blizzard of '78 still hangs like the Sword of Damocles over every weatherman's head. Rather than ever repeat that unfortunate incident, the forecasters, like the infamous groundhog, always predict the worst possible outcome so that the reality will seem tame by comparison.

I am going to head out pretty soon. My Miata can only drive over so much snow, after all. I anticipate a multi-hour trip for what is normally a twenty-five minute drive. Ah, the joys of New England.

You can respond to my ranting here.

Scared rantless.
