2010 - The Year of the Tiger

(But I don't want to find one in my pool.)

The pool has been open for . Unlike most previous years, I plan to take a lazy approach to capturing images of every rodent, amphibian, and extraordinary insect that takes its final swim in our pool. So many critters. So many years.

These pages merely document the cruelty of Mother Nature as well as my own apathy.

August 8, 2010 - 20 swims to date.

August 8, 2010

Allison fished out two frogs from the shallow end of the pool before our party. No Jim == no pictures.

July 25, 2010

There was one lonely frog sunk in the shallow end of the pool today. I chucked him into the woods with my usual aplomb. I did not take a picture, though.

July 18, 2010

Well, it is amazing how many more critters I have the energy to photograph when I actually want to get in the pool. I was pretty excited today to find what I believe is a shrew (in the left picture and close up in the middle picture above.) The left hand batch of two mice and let's call it eight frogs came out of the northern skimmer, and the let's call it four frogs came out of the southern (deep end) skimmer. It's tricky to count when the bodies start coming apart, but that is my lot in life, I guess.

July 15, 2010

I ran out this morning to put out some chlorine pucks for the pool dudes, and I notices some critters floating in the shallow end. And then I notices a few frogs sunken in the shallow end. So I pulled out my trusty skimmer, scooped them, took these lousy cell phone pictures, and had myself a good old fashioned catapult into the woods. I found a bunch more frogs in the northern skimmer, but some of them were alive, so I just let them be the pool dudes' problem.

July 11, 2010

Up to ten swims so far this year. It's all about amortization. I found these critters in the northern basket.

July 5, 2010

Got in for a swim today, a mere six weeks or so after opening the pool.

June 26, 2010

The pool service isn't working out great so far. I did find a dead frog in the southern skimmer as I was putting in algaecide manually in an attempt to turn the pool blue instead of green.

June 4, 2010

After a rough and expensive start to the pool season (pump wouldn't work, one of the ball valves was cracked, new pool "service" isn't that great), we are up and running, more or less. I found the first dead thing - a mouse in the northern skimmer. I didn't photograph it, but I did toss it into the woods with my usual flair. Which is to say, no flair whatsoever.

We're going to try using a pool service to clean the pool once a week this year. If that doesn't work out, next year the only dead thing that we will find in our pool will be the pool itself.

May 25, 2010

Extremely late getting this page updated! Whether or not we'd even have a pool for things to be found dead in was up for debate this year. Apathy and packrattedness won.

Check out for what there was of last year's pictures!
