We spent five days in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We stayed at the Mount Washington Inn, which was very picturesque, but a little too foo-foo and antique for my tastes. The room heat was basically a crap shoot - the old fashioned cast iron radiator essentially had two settings, "off" and "unbelievably hot". It had a thermostat thingy, but that was just for show, I reckon.
Although we didn't realize it until the day before we drove up there, meals were included in the room rate, and gentlemen (a classification to which I am only grudgingly admitting myself) were required to wear jackets at dinner. My one slightly small suit got quite a work out! (I am so classy.)
The highlight of the trip was the hiking. The weather was pretty good. The first two days were absolutely beautiful, then it rained on Wednesday, but Thursday cleared up enough to get a few more hikes in. We hiked maybe ten miles total. In theory, one fellow hiker said that we passed a bear on one of our outings, but we didn't see it, and neither did another set of hikers that came the same way a few minutes later than us. It was fun overall - for me, hiking is always more fun in retrospect than in prospect, and it did give me a chance to exercise the new camera a bit. The fall colors were a bit muted, but were still pretty striking from the summits.
One final note: The aspect ratio of waterfalls pretty much demands portrait rather than landscape orientation of some of these pictures. I modified my slideshow code accordingly. You may notice a longer delay before you start seeing the tiny thumbnail pictures, because some browsers need to see all of the pictures before displaying any of them if the sizes are not specified beforehand (which is why I originally had the landscape orientation restriction.) Just wait - they'll all show up eventually.
